How do you make Mum happy?

Where does Mother’s Day come from?

The veneration of mothers probably dates back thousands of years. One need only think of the Virgin Mary, who is accorded a special status in the Catholic Church. In medieval England, there was already a ‘Mothering Sunday’ on which people did something nice for their own mothers, but it was the Americans who made this custom known worldwide. Mother’s Day as a public holiday, as we know it today, goes back to the women’s rights activist Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for the introduction of an official holiday in honour of mothers. Finally, ‘Mother’s Day’ was celebrated for the first time as a national holiday in the USA in 1914. However, the founder, Anna Jarvis, did not agree with the increasing commercialisation of Mother’s Day and subsequently tried to abolish it. Unsuccessfully, as we know. Via England, Norway and Sweden, Mother’s Day also reached German-speaking countries in the 1920s.

From 1924 onwards, Mother’s Day was celebrated in Austria on the second Sunday in May. Local florists, in particular, promoted the occasion. The Nazis, too, knew how to exploit this day for their own interests. From 1933, the holiday was designated as the ‘Day of Remembrance and Honour for German Mothers’. Mothers with many children were honoured with the Cross of Honour for German Mothers and portrayed as the preservers of the Aryan race. After the war, Mother’s Day once again became a holiday without any political overtones.

Flowers are the classic Mother’s Day gift. You can’t really go wrong with them. However, you should find out beforehand which flowers Mum likes and which she doesn’t. As a child, everyone has made something for their mum or recited a poem. Many websites offer suggestions for poems, handmade gifts or even songs. As a child, you believe that these gifts bring Mum the most joy. However, various surveys are now challenging this belief.
