Wellness in winter

What is healthy? What helps combat the winter blues?
Staying healthy through the winter
If you want to stay fit for the winter, you should get moving. This strengthens the immune system and boosts levels of happiness hormones in the body. Even a daily walk is enough to keep the circulation going and give your lungs a good clear-out. It’s not about intensity, but about regularity. This is particularly important when it gets dark earlier. Otherwise, a false sense of cosiness can quickly set in, which, with prolonged inactivity, manifests as demotivation, listlessness and muscle loss. Unless you already practise a sport all year round, endurance sports such as running, cross-country skiing, ski touring and swimming are particularly suitable in winter.
To balance out the exercise, however, you should also allow your body the necessary recovery time. Practices such as yoga and meditation are ideal for this, as they allow the body and mind to find peace. You can also do yourself a lot of good by eating the right foods when it gets cold outside. Foods that provide warmth and strengthen the immune system are recommended. Spices such as chilli, curry, ginger or turmeric provide the body with plenty of warming energy. Seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as cabbage, should also feature on the menu in winter. The immune system can also be supported with vitamin C and zinc. Sufficient sleep should not be underestimated. Only then are we truly balanced, strengthened and able to perform at our best.
Wellness in winter
As we have read, winter-related illnesses can be counteracted with regular exercise in the fresh air, relaxation, a balanced diet and sufficient sleep. Anyone wishing to treat themselves to an extra boost of health in winter can also visit the sauna. Sweating relaxes the muscles, detoxifies the body and strengthens our resistance. The effect on the mind should not be underestimated either, as a visit to the sauna clears the mind and warms the soul.
However, the sauna is only suitable for healthy people! Anyone who is in poor health or has heart or circulatory problems should avoid using the sauna. There are, of course, other ways to relax the muscles. Massages and treatments promote physical and mental well-being, reduce stress, relieve pain and stimulate cellular metabolism.
Winzer instead of winter
The Hotel Winzer in the Salzkammergut on Lake Attersee is the largest hotel spa in the Salzkammergut and the best place for those seeking wellness, even in winter. Spanning 5,000 m², you’ll find everything you could wish for in terms of warming relaxation and more.
