The most beautiful walks in the Attergau – Part 2
2019/12/08
From St. Georgen to the smaller hills
The Buchberg Loop
This circular walking route offers some fantastic vantage points. You can look out over Lake Attersee and take in the mountains of the Salzkammergut and the Northern Alps.
In Attersee am Attersee, the walk starts from the Atterseehalle. From there, a forest adventure trail leads to the south side of the Buchberg (trail no. 4). The first magnificent viewpoints await you here. The route then continues through the forest to Palmsdorf and turns right via Hittstatt to Berg. You return to the Buchberg ridge via a forest road and reach the Schlossberg, where the foundations of the medieval Fliehburg lie. Via the forest adventure trail and the Sonnleitenweg, you reach the starting point again. Here you will also find the Terrassencafé Koberger, where you can reward yourself with a snack after your walk.

Lichtenberg
If you fancy a slightly longer hike, you should climb the Lichtenberg. Thanks to the altitude, the panorama is even more impressive than on the hike around the Buchberg. The Lichtenberg didn’t get its name for nothing, as the sun usually shines up here. If not in the sky, then at least in your heart, as the trail offers plenty of happiness and Salzkammergut charm.
We start in the centre of St. Georgen and head towards Straß im Attergau. After a left-hand bend on Attergaustraße, you should make a short detour into the park, where the 1,000-year-old lime tree stands in Gries. This natural monument is the first highlight of the trail. We then continue on to Thalham and along the Lichtenberg farm track, past the Thalham forest lodge into the Klauswald.
After about two and a half kilometres, follow the signs to the right up the Lichtenberg and, after about an hour’s walk, you’ll reach an idyllically situated high plateau with lush meadows. Here you’ll also find the Danter mountain inn, which treats hikers to culinary delights. At the summit (at 825 metres) stands a 32-metre-high viewing tower, from which there are wonderful views of Traunstein, the Höllengebirge, Schafberg, Dachstein, the Northern Alps and, of course, Lake Attersee. The return journey takes you along the mountain road towards Weißenkirchen, past the Hubertus Chapel, or through the Klauswald.
