Where Advent makes your eyes sparkle
Advent in the Salzkammergut
It is in the Salzkammergut in particular that Advent shows itself at its most beautiful. Here, old traditions are cherished and, nestled between mountains and lakes, the pre-Christmas atmosphere really comes into its own. The charm of the little markets will enchant you too. We have picked out the most beautiful Christmas markets in the Salzkammergut for you...
Dreifaltigkeit on Lake Wolfgang
There are three locations on Lake Wolfgang hosting Advent markets:
in St. Gilgen, for example, it is the Baroque Advent. Baroque, because the stalls are decorated with Baroque paintings by the artist Raja Schwahn Reichmann. These depict people in traditional costume, angels, animals and many lovely details. A well-heated wine arbour invites you to take a break and sample some wine, whilst the eleven-metre-high candle on the lakeshore, together with other candles around the entire lake, bathes Lake Wolfgang in a romantic glow.
In Strobl on Lake Wolfgang, a six-metre-long comet points the way to the Shepherds’ Path and the Advent Gate – the entrance to the romantic nativity village. Thirty stalls, roofed with real wooden shingles, offer the finest handicrafts and specialities from the region. In the heart of the nativity village, you can observe animals such as deer, fawns and lambs. As darkness falls, music groups perform and traditional Swedish torches illuminate the winter night.
Advent in St. Wolfgang also has plenty of atmospheric delights to offer. The torches along the Lantern Street light the way to the fascination of living traditions. Singing angels, the Salzkammergut Nativity Scene with 70 life-size figures, the Wise Men’s brass band, and the Angel Post Office are all well worth a visit. And if you cast your gaze upon the lake, you’ll spot the huge, floating Peace Light lantern.
Advent on Lake Wolfgang is truly unique in its trinity; you can find more information here.
Christmas spirit in Mondsee
The Advent market in Mondsee has been held for many years on the beautiful square in front of the basilica. Here, regional crafts meet local delicacies. Of course, you can also enjoy a glass of mulled wine here. Things get even more traditional just around the corner in the cloister of the former Mondsee monastery. Here you’ll find authentic Christmas decorations steeped in history and tradition, handed down through many generations. Mondsee offers an atmospheric Advent market with plenty of heart.
Craftsmen’s Christmas Market in Bad Ischl
Every year, the artisans of Ischl invite visitors to the traditional Christmas market in the historic Trinkhalle of the imperial and royal spa town. Why is this something special? Because the artisans of Ischl are renowned for their craftsmanship far beyond the borders of the Salzkammergut. Great attention is also paid to the functionality of the art objects. After all, craftsmanship should also be useful.
Castle Advent on Lake Traunsee
The Castle Advent on Lake Traunsee at the Ort Lake and Country Castle in Gmunden is all about the magic of Christmas, without any frills or hustle and bustle. Unique light displays, a floating nativity scene, illuminated Christmas motifs by the lake and the 123-metre-long, festively decorated wooden bridge are just some of the highlights of this Advent market. Concerts take place daily in the courtyards of the castles, where history, culture and the Christmas spirit come together in a particularly beautiful way.
A Christmas base in St. Georgen
When the Advent markets beckon with their crafts and delicacies, you should take your time. At the Hotel Winzer in St. Georgen, you’ll find the perfect base for your Christmas excursions to the Salzkammergut. Close enough to all the Christmas markets mentioned above, and if the urge to go out ever wanes, you can relax in the pre-Christmas atmosphere at our hotel spa, enjoy culinary delights and snuggle up.
