When the senses melt into the hands

The origins of massage

The word ‘massage’ derives from the Arabic word for ‘to touch’ or the Greek word for ‘to knead’. The oldest written records on the subject come from China – they date back to 2,600 BC. In India, too, there are early writings on the subject in connection with Ayurveda. But how did this knowledge reach Europe? It was the Greek physician Hippocrates who popularised massage among the Greeks and subsequently among the Romans. These soothing therapies were an integral part of social life at the time. However, with the decline of these cultures, knowledge of the art of massage was lost in Europe. It was not until the end of the Middle Ages that Paracelsus rediscovered massage. The French surgeon Ambroise Paré was then largely responsible in the 16th century for establishing massage within medicine. With Swedish massage, this knowledge was further developed across borders from the 19th century onwards and thus spread throughout the world. Nowadays, massage is an integral part of healthcare. Massage therapists loosen up stiff and tense areas of the body and ensure adequate blood circulation in problem areas – this promotes physical and mental well-being, reduces stress, alleviates pain and stimulates cellular metabolism.

The many facets of massage

There are many different types of massage. Direct forms of massage include, for example, classical massage, Ayurvedic massage, brush massage, stamp massage, Shiatsu and Thai massage. Reflexology-based massages include acupressure, acupuncture and reflexology. In addition, there are energetic treatments such as hot stone massage and sound massage. Eroticism also has a place in the world of massage. Even the Kama Sutra describes various types of massage intended to enhance sexual activity. Almost everyone has massaged their partner at some point. Lovers enjoy giving massages and being massaged themselves. During a massage, a couple can enjoy gentle touch, intimacy and romance. Candles and soothing music create the perfect atmosphere.

Massage for two

If you want to treat your partner to a massage, you can do so at home. However, there are a few basic rules to follow. It all starts with the environment. A relaxed atmosphere, a comfortable temperature and the right surface create the ideal conditions for a successful massage. Almond, olive or sesame oils make massaging easier whilst also pampering the skin. Problem areas and preferences should be discussed beforehand. The back is usually the focus of the massage. You should massage on both sides of the spine and never apply pressure directly on the spine or bones.

Here are a few tips for beginners:

  • Apply a sufficient amount of oil to the palms of your hands
  • Start with gentle circular movements using the whole of your palms
  • Use your fingers and the balls of your hands to target specific areas of tension
  • Knead rather than squeeze
  • Light tapping with the edge of your hand can stimulate
  • If pain occurs, reduce pressure, move away from the area or stop the massage

Encourage your partner to give feedback. After the massage, you should rest for about 20 minutes. Wrapped in a blanket, mind and body can truly let go. Massages are the epitome of well-being – whether at home or with a professional.
