How to make Dad happy
Where does Father’s Day come from?
In Austria, Father’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday in June. However, like Mother’s Day, the modern Father’s Day actually originated in the USA. It has been celebrated there since 1910. A woman was responsible for introducing Father’s Day in the USA! The American Sonora Louisa Dodd wanted to pay her father the honour he deserved, as he had raised their six children alone with great love following the death of their mother. She believed the children should show their gratitude with gifts, church services and a meal. Father’s Day arrived in Europe in the 1930s. In Austria, this holiday has been officially celebrated since 1955. In terms of sales, it is now not far behind Mother’s Day.
What do you give for Father’s Day?
What does Dad like? Flowers and socks aren’t exactly the sort of things that bring tears of joy to most men. Handmade gifts, just like on Mother’s Day, are encouraged in nursery schools for Father’s Day too and are often well received by loving fathers. Culinary treats such as beer, wine, spirits, chocolate or food also rank highly on the list. But if you want to give something special, you’ll have to be a bit more creative...
Special Father’s Day gifts
If you really want to make your dad happy, you need creativity, courage and a good instinct. It’s not easy to find the right thing; after all, not all dads are the same. Here we’ve tried to list a few tips for an extraordinary Father’s Day.
Shared moments
The most precious thing you can give is time spent together. Simply being together and talking to one another is enough. Combined with a little something special, it becomes a unique experience that you’ll fondly remember. A meal in a special place (e.g. a barbecue in the countryside) or with special dishes surrounded by loved ones can make for a particularly lovely day. Add to that perhaps a game or some physical activity, and the day is filled with shared experiences.
New experiences
Everyone remembers the first time they learnt, saw or did something new. Dads too. If the new experience also brings positive feelings, nothing can really go wrong. These new experiences can range from a visit to a museum, trying out new restaurants, guided nature walks, exploring new places, climbing new peaks, right up to a car race, driving a digger, attending concerts, tandem paragliding flights or a tandem parachute jump. There are no limits to the imagination – it just needs to be something Dad enjoys.
Fathers are heroes
Men love adventure, at least most of them. Every man was once a child and imagined himself as the hero of a story. That longing never really goes away. If you want to make a father happy, hand over the reins and let him take the helm. A boat trip as captain, piloting a plane for once, commanding as a prince at a medieval banquet, or keeping order as a cowboy in a Wild West town? There are plenty of ways to bring out the hero in your father...
Special vouchers
Many people start yawning when it comes to vouchers, yet there are so many possibilities. A voucher for a dance class, a guitar lesson, a dinner in the dark, a whisky tasting, a city break or a stay at a romantic and wellness hotel (we recommend the Hotel Winzer)... The important thing with vouchers is that the giver is genuinely serious about it and the recipient actually wants the gift. So vouchers are actually always a good choice.
