Tips for romantic words

Words of love

So, the time has come. Your feelings are overflowing and you want to write something romantic to your loved one. The possibilities are endless: a short note on the kitchen table, a classic handwritten letter, or – in keeping with the spirit of the times – a message via social media. It’s worth noting, however, that a letter is, of course, a tangible object and holds greater value than a digital message that can be quickly deleted. Whatever the medium, messages of love (provided they’re not just emojis) can reveal a whole new side to love. This was already the case with Cyrano de Bergerac: when the beloved fell in love not with the handsome face of the supposed author, but with the words of the ghostwriter with the long nose. Words have power, and we want to use this power positively to give love a helping hand. That’s why we’ve put together a few tips here for motivated beginners.

It’s not about the length

Men often tend to see everything as a competition. The bigger or longer something is, the better. Here, that approach is completely misplaced. A short message that gets straight to the heart of your feelings often makes a bigger impression than a page-long opus that contains more rambling than genuine emotion. As a beginner, it might be better to start with short poems or love quotes and only venture into longer texts once you’ve had some success in this area.

The right moment

A love message should really always be appropriate! Newlyweds, older couples, but also partners going through a rough patch can use this to strengthen their bond. A love poem is always well received on a birthday, Valentine’s Day, at Christmas, on an anniversary or on a wedding anniversary. The recipient sees that you’ve really put some thought into it, and texts written for a specific occasion are simply something special. It just shouldn’t become overused, as that diminishes the value of the content.

Let go of your inhibitions and write a list

If you don’t believe in yourself, you won’t write well. Your own embarrassment gets in the way of writing. “Too cheesy or too romantic,” you might think. But women love it when a man shows his sensitive side. It’s fine to go a bit over the top with romance! Mind you, “a bit” – too much of it and the love soup is over-salted. So it’s best to start by jotting down what you feel when you think of the other person. Just as a list. What was romantic? What situations have you been through together? What makes the other person so special? What do you love about your partner? What pet names do you have? Once everything is written down, you have a foundation from which you can venture into coherent sentences or even rhymes.

Authentic, but with a plan!

Authenticity is important! If you like rhyming, go for it. If you’d rather just write whatever comes to mind, go for that approach. Still, some sort of structure is important. Organise your thoughts and try to arrange everything following a common thread. Which words go together? Which moods share the same tone? Which metaphors fit in? People love hearing stories. Introduction, main body and conclusion. The structure could look like this, or something similar. Or it could be completely different. Grammar isn’t that important here; what matters is the feeling you express through it.

German or English?

Just as with singing, English often sounds less cheesy and more melodious when writing. If you don’t feel entirely comfortable with German, you can choose short English phrases as a love message. There are thousands of these to be found online. But that is precisely the problem. It makes it nothing special anymore. Your own words are far more valuable than copy-pasting!

Looking for inspiration

There are plenty of resources online for people who want to write love notes. Get some inspiration and help! There’s no shame in that. See how differently words can be used. Here are a few useful links:

Examples

There are many ways to express your love. Here are a few examples:

“I love you more than anything, my darling, and I want to tell you that you are the most important thing to me. I’ll never let you go again! You are everything to me!” Author
unknown (Sprüche-und-wuensche.de)

“I’ll go with you to the ends of the earth, to the end of time... until shooting stars fall like snow.”
Linda Morgenstern

“You’re a great guy to me, that’s why I fell in love with you.
And no matter what others say, you’ll always be in my heart.
And no one can separate us, because you set my heart on fire.
And no matter how far apart we are, just stay as you are.
Because with our love, it doesn’t matter who’s where.”
Christian Düser

Read through before sending

Is the poem finished? Then read it through carefully once more. It’s best to leave it for a day and then read it again with a bit of distance. Do you understand everything clearly? Are all the sentences unambiguous? Have any mistakes crept in? How does it sound when you read what you’ve written aloud? Does it convey what you want to say?
