Why massage the feet?

Even in Tarantino’s film “Pulp Fiction”, a foot massage is the big topic that divides opinion. Is a foot massage purely a wellness treatment, or is it more than that? Why are feet generally important in a massage? Well, the answer is actually relatively simple. Almost all the nerve pathways that run through our body end in the feet. It is therefore an extremely sensitive area that has a major influence on our general well-being. Reflexology theory assigns specific reflex zones on the feet to every organ in the body. When treated correctly, these can be stimulated to have a relaxing or invigorating effect. A foot reflexology massage can help relieve tension, joint pain, sleep disturbances, headaches, digestive problems, colds and circulatory issues.

Apart from these treatment options, which should only be carried out by trained practitioners, anyone can give a relaxing foot massage at home with relative ease. There are a few things to bear in mind...

Preparing for a foot massage

The first step before a foot massage is washing. Only clean feet should be massaged. This prevents awkward moments for both parties and ensures the necessary hygiene. Washing someone’s feet is a sign of the deepest respect; in the past, it was even a sign of great hospitality. It is best to have a towel and soap ready in advance and to run a basin of warm water. A drop of lavender oil in the bathwater has a relaxing effect. Eucalyptus oil, horse chestnut and arnica have an invigorating effect. Sweaty feet can be prevented with sage, bicarbonate of soda or apple cider vinegar. Afterwards, the feet should be dried thoroughly and rubbed with a moisturiser or massage oil. Almond, olive or sesame oils make massaging easier whilst pampering the skin at the same time. The atmosphere also influences the success of the massage. So first ensure a relaxed atmosphere in the room. Perhaps with soft background music, dimmed lighting or candles. Set a comfortable room temperature and choose a suitable spot for the massage. The person being massaged can lie down or sit. The masseur should ideally place the feet on their thighs so that the toes point upwards and the soles of the feet are exposed.

Don’t forget: trim your fingernails beforehand and warm up your hands!

How to pamper feet perfectly

How do you start a foot massage? If you’ve already washed the feet, you’ve had physical contact, but if you haven’t, you might want to approach things a bit more cautiously. So gently and softly cup your hands around the feet, just feeling and sensing them. Once you’ve applied enough massage oil, the actual massage can begin. First, stroke the sole and instep evenly and with light pressure. If your partner is ticklish, you should increase the pressure slightly. Then knead the soles vigorously using circular movements. Always check whether your partner is flinching or even feeling pain. It’s best to ask if it’s still comfortable! Next, focus on the toes and the top of the foot. The toes can be gently stretched and twisted, but should generally be treated a little more gently than the soles and the tops of the feet. If you have more time, you can also include the calves in the massage. Then return to the soles and focus on specific areas. Press deeper slowly with your thumbs and watch for a reaction.
If a firm or painful spot appears, hold the pressure for 5 to 30 seconds with the tip of your thumb and repeat this until the tension or pain has eased. In the event of severe pain, please do not press directly on the spot, but work carefully around it. Once one foot has been massaged, repeat the same procedure with the other foot. The second foot is usually a bit easier, as you now have more experience and are already familiar with your partner’s sensitive areas.

After the massage

Once the massage is finished, you can wash your feet again to remove any remaining oil, apply moisturiser and then wrap them in a warm blanket or warm socks.

We wish you every success, and if this is too tiring for you, you are welcome to book a foot massage with us at Hotel Winzer.
